Yamaha world registers 192% sales hike in January 2011

With the help of its two stunning bikes, FZ16 and YZF R15 – India Yamaha Motor Ltd registered sales growth of 192% during January 2009, at 18,320 units, as compared to 6,284 units in January 2008. The 18,000+ figure may not be as high as posted by other bike-makers, but the 192% is a huge leap forward in the right direction for Yamaha.

Eying a big potential for luxury bikes in India, where tastes are changing from mass-market machines to high-end bikes, Honda and Bajaj are looking at launching new sportsbikes in the country in the next couple of months.

There had been a sudden surge in the number of International Sportsbikes brands entering the Indian market, over the past two years. Initially the trend was set by Kinetic with the launch of the 250cc, v-twin-powered Hyosung Comet in India back in 2005. Then it was Yamaha, which launched the Yamaha R1 in India and the MT-01 cruiser in 2007. Soon later followed by the Italian motorcycle giant Ducati, who launched an array of superbikes costing up to almost 50 lakhs, and finally Suzuki joined the superbike bandwagon in late-2008, with its

A one off Ferrari badged bike, created by an MV Agusta design guru, failed to sell when it came up for auction.

The 900cc bike was built by David Kay Engineering as a tribute to the late Enzo Ferrari in the early 1990s.

It had an estimate of £180,000 when it came up for sale in Switzerland on Saturday, but was one of the few items which failed to sell.

The bike has a four cylinder dohc custom engine, which has a claimed output of 105bhp and top speed of 164mph.

Kay, who is well known for his work with MV Agusta, was given permission to add the prancing horse logo to the bike by Enzo’s son, Piero, in a letter which is included among the items for sale.

Shortly after the revelation that Volkswagen wished it hadn't passed up on the opportunity to purchase famed Italian bike maker Ducati, comes a word that the German automaker has plans for its own line of motorcycles. What we can say for sure is that the rumored bike isn't likely to look anything like the picture above, which nonetheless is an interesting mash-up of an Aprilia trellis frame along with bodywork from MV Agusta. At least the artist chose good stock from which to pilfer. KTM, more and more a serious manufacturer itself, is the likely source of bike-specific components and is rumored to be providing technical know-how to VW as a sort-of repayment for the help it received in designing the awesome X-Bow, which uses an Audi engine. KTM is known in the bike realm for producing excellent engines, so basing a possible VeeDub VeeTwin on existing Katoom architecture strikes us as a good idea. What also strikes us as a good idea is the reconsideration of the ill-fated GX3 three-wheeler, which was axed over fears of possible litigation. If VW were to sponsor a range of two-wheelers already, though, the GX3 would be a much safer bet for future production. Let us cross our collective fingers on this one
